A good rug should not only be decorative – it should help create a focal point in your living room. Placing a rug in the right place can change the overall look and feel of a space.
How To Choose A Area Rug For Living Room
“A rug is often the decorative piece that ties all the other elements of a room together,” says interior designer Kimberly Gorsline of Kimberly Marie Interiors. “It helps the furniture feel grounded while offering visual and tactile texture.” Getting the most out of your rug is all about choosing the right size for your living room, which ultimately depends on how big your space is and where your furniture will sit on the rug.
How To Choose The Right Size And Style For Your Area Rug
Although sizes vary greatly depending on the type of loom used and the region of the world where the rug is woven, Keith Miller of Miller Interior Design says there are general standard rug sizes to choose from.
Try to work one of these sizes into your space (instead of choosing a specific iteration), says interior designer Liz McPhail, as they tend to be the most common. “Don’t be afraid to take your blue tape and tape the corners of the regular rugs in your room, experiment with what works best,” she says.
For living rooms, you’ll want to stick to larger buildings. “Unless you have a particularly small or large room, or an oddly shaped room that requires multiple rugs, it’s usually 9 by 12 feet or 8 by 10 feet,” McPhail says.
Don’t choose a rug that is too big to touch your wall. “Unless you’re trying to hide uncomfortable floor conditions, you want to leave some space between the ends of the rug and the walls,” says McPhail. “Often we put rugs over wood floors or tiles that we like – we just want to define a space, add warmth and comfort and muffle sound.”
How To Choose The Right Rug
He recommends leaving about 6 inches or more of space between the wall and the carpet—anything closer than 4 to 5 inches will look a little cramped.
When choosing the right rug size, Billy Ceglia of Billy Ceglia Designs says the rug should be large enough so that all of the furniture in the area has front legs on the rug. As a general rule, MacPhail says to allow at least 3 inches of carpet space behind the front legs of your furniture.
Taking those 3 inches into account, MacPhail says, is to choose a rug that’s large enough to avoid cramming all of your furniture together. “There should be at least 12 inches between the couch and the coffee table and the chairs on the other side for enough room to pass,” she says.
While there’s no right or wrong way to place a rug in your living room, Gorsline says it’s generally safe to place a sofa on top of it. “As the anchor of a room, if the rug isn’t the centerpiece, it makes everything else look a little bit different,” she explains.
How To Layer Rugs On Carpet
However, depending on the size of the room and the style of the sofa, Gorsline says the sofa doesn’t always have to be perfectly centered on the rug. “In the case of a large cut, the cut should fit more closely to the corner of the rug—if possible, leave a little edge, not in the middle,” she says.
You should always choose a rug size that’s large enough to fit under your most outdoor furniture, says Kerry Kelly, creative director of the Kerry Kelly Design Lab. “You want the rug to have a grounding function, so make sure it’s not too small so it doesn’t look like a postage stamp in the middle of the space,” she says.
Ceglia backs up this point, saying that if you’re torn between two different rugs, bigger is always better. “Too small a rug is worse than no rug at all,” he says. “A larger rug makes a space feel more cohesive and makes furniture more comfortable and practical.
If you’re lucky enough to have a large living room, Bruce Fox of Bruce Fox Design says you can use different rugs in different sizes to create separate areas throughout the space. “Each seating area can have its own rug, or there can be a large central rug with smaller accent rugs around the room,” she explains.

How To Choose The Right Rug Size For Your Living Room
Rugs are one of my favorite ways to add warmth, dimension, and interest while really defining a space in a room. They help transform a space and make it feel cohesive, but shopping for them and knowing which size is right for your space isn’t always easy. Today we’re sharing a guide to help you choose the perfect size rug for your space, and we’re also sharing some of our favorite rugs!
When buying a rug, the first thing to consider is the size, shape and layout of the room. You want to make sure that the rug is large enough to accommodate the space, as a rug that is too small can make the space appear cramped. and it seems unmatched and the same goes for the oversized rug. That’s why it’s so important to measure your space and what’s in it.
Depending on how you want to arrange your furniture, there are many different layout options you can choose for your rug. The three main ways to place furniture around a rug are: only the front legs of the furniture on the rug, all the furniture legs on the rug, or all the furniture outside the rug except for the coffee table (use the picture we created below for reference). If you choose to carpet all of your furniture (except the coffee table), make sure the rug is at least the width of your couch (preferably a foot wider).
Once you’ve decided on the layout and size of rug you want, we recommend using painter’s tape to mock up the placement of the rug. This will help you better see the rug in your room before ordering.

You use a very similar process when choosing a rug for your bedroom. Don’t forget to consider the shape of the room, take into account the position of the doors in the space and check all other furniture in the room (ottomans, end of bed benches, etc.). If you have a bench or ottoman at the end of your bed, you’ll want to make sure your rug is large enough for the items to sit fully on and has at least 12 inches of padding.
